You may have noticed that Saratoga County is seeing an influx of leisure travelers. This is great news as we begin to navigate the post-COVID-19 waters. People are feeling more confident and safer when it comes to taking vacations, and they’ve set their sights on us! Thankfully! However, according to the U.S. Travel Association, business travel spending is down 69% and spending related to meetings, conferences and events declined even further—down 76%. Until business travel, and meetings and events are fully restored, the pace of economic recovery will continue to suffer.

The value of in-person meetings is irreplaceable. It may be surprising, but the top barriers to resume business travel are government and companies’ policies restricting travel, not the traveler themselves—less than one in 10 employees are unwilling to travel. In fact, 86% of business travelers are looking forward to getting back on the road!

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we have found ourselves on more video calls than ever before, and we are simply exhausted. Despite the benefits of virtual meetings, there is simply no substitute for human interaction. Meeting attendees crave engagement and socialization. Face-to-face meetings are essential to building relationships, but also create memorable experiences.

Unlike social gatherings, professional meetings and events (PMEs) provide a controlled setting for the secure implementation of health and safety measures designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In fact, according to scientific modeling by the Exhibitions and Conferences Alliance and Epistemix, in-person PMEs pose a near-zero (0.001%) risk of COVID-19 transmission to attendees—even for large events. In states like New York, where gathering limits have been lifted, successful and safe meetings and events are already taking place. These meetings, occurring in controlled environments and executed by professional meeting planners, have layers of health practices in place to ensure the overall health and safety of attendees and guests. Not only that, but these meetings also drive significant economic recovery to our local community.

As a destination, Saratoga Springs is taking all the necessary precautions to keep our city safe. Our hotel partners have increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as well as implemented contactless check-in and check-out. Our restaurant partners have opted for contactless menus and can serve individually plated meals or pre-packaged grab-and-go options for meeting attendees. And our retail partners continue to wear masks in some cases and disinfect daily to keep their employees and shoppers safe.

It's time to get back to meeting face-to-face. Now that gathering restrictions have been lifted, Saratoga Springs is ready and eager to welcome back meeting and convention groups.
