Many people dusted off their luggage and hit the road this summer, and numerous visitors came to Saratoga Springs to go see friends, relatives, and landscapes up close and personal! With most everything open, our destination experienced strong leisure travel demand, and we needed it. Visitors came for the thrill of Saratoga Race Course, the excitement of Saratoga Performing Arts Center and Live Nation concerts, and the natural beauty or our parks, cultural arts, and thriving downtown.

Our lodging partners had a strong season with some even setting revenue records. The same can be said for our restaurants and our retailers. Visitors came primarily from a three-hour radius, most driving, to experience our destination. Many discovered us for the first-time last year, electing to stay in New York.  They returned in a big way.

According to Smith Travel Reports, here is a snapshot of our summer lodging performance:

Saratoga County Hotel Performance:

Occupancy      June         July          August

This Year          61.8%      71.2%       78.4%

Last Year          37.3%      43.6%       57.8%

2019                69.4%      78.5%       83.7%

This Year         $134.92     $197.62     $327.36

Last Year         $103.28     $123.96     $129.19

2019               $137.10     $191.75     $324.41

City of Saratoga Springs:

Occupancy      June        July          August

This Year          62.3%      71.90%    79.2%

Last Year          34.9%      43.1%      62.5%

2019                71.3%      80.1%      85.3%

This Year         $152.28    $234.86     $291.71

Last Year         $109.68    $134.07     $141.96

2019               $153.47    $223.77     $283.82

You can see that 2020 was quite a low point when most everything was shut down. While we didn’t break revenue records in 2021, the occupancy and average daily rate that our lodging partners were able to command shows a strong return to our historical patterns (2019).  The future looks bright!

As we enter fall, we are beginning to see an uptick in meetings and events along with leaf peepers taking in our local scenic beauty. Our meetings and conventions are now taking place, many of them have been pushed back from last year and the beginning of this year, and they are now happening safely. One of my favorite sights to see are groups of meeting attendees walking downtown with their lanyards and name tags hanging from their necks! Between meetings, they shop and dine at our local businesses. They are excited to be here, conducting business and connecting with their colleagues in our beautiful destination. It goes without saying that professional meetings are vital to our local economy, and we are heading in the right direction. If the event leads that our Discover Saratoga sales team are working on convert, we should also see a strong 2022.

Looking back on the transformative effect the last year-and-a-half has had on our organization, and our destination, we will never take an in-person meeting for granted again! As we look to regain our footing, I would like to remind people that recovery is not by coincidence, it is a result of the continued hard work, grit and creativity of our local stakeholders, and our members.
