Benson’s Pet Center, locally and family owned and operated, will be opening a new location at 175 Ballston Ave, with a tentative opening date set for Black Friday (Nov. 26). Benson’s has rebranded their store at 3083 NY-50 (next to the Wilton Mall) as their Wilton location, and this new location will officially become their Saratoga store.
Ryan Kramer, co-President of Benson’s, has always been passionate about pets, especially fish. He started working at a small fish store in the Albany area, and then partnered with the original owner of Benson’s to sell his fish inside the store. After four months, Kramer was doing more business than the rest of the pet store. At 21, he was offered the opportunity and bought the store with his father, Frank, who left his 20-year career in Boston, MA.
“Over the years we have grown to have 6 locations in Wilton, Clifton Park, Colonie, Queensbury, Pittsfield (Massachusetts), with our most recent location being Johnstown, about 5 years ago. We are now ready to add a new location in the heart of Saratoga Springs. And there might be another new store coming soon,” hinted Kramer.
Benson’s Fish Room, an extension of Benson’s Pet Center that sells all things fish and aquarium related, opened three years ago in Ballston Spa (2031 Doubleday Ave).
“We were profitable in one year,” said Kramer. “That is just unheard of in this business.”
Kramer credits a lot of Benson’s success to his employees, most of which have worked at Benson’s for 15 to 30 years.
“Without them we wouldn’t be able to do all this,” added Kramer.
Benson’s offers home delivery and curbside pick-up at www.bensonspet.com and www.bensonsfishroom.com, in addition to shopping in-store. Their new Saratoga location will have a self-service dog washing station; all other locations will eventually have one as well.
Before the pandemic, Benson’s Fish Room ran a “Scales and Ales” event, where customers could sample ales and get inspired to create aquarium art. We are looking forward to the new additions and more fun events at Benson’s as they continue to expand their pet-friendly (and people-friendly) business.
