“Maybe their printer’s not working; maybe their Wi-Fi is constantly going down; maybe they’re getting hacked, and they don’t know why,” said Kay, a Hudson Falls native and Gansevoort resident. “We work with them to (come up with) better solutions.”
Interlinked, according to Kay, is a “managed services provider,” a catch-all phrase that includes system maintenance, threat management, monitoring, and backup and recovery.
“Businesses need to be actively protected, monitored, supported day to day--all their computer systems,” said Kay, 37. “We work directly with owners and managers to develop better IT policies and procedures to make sure their sensitive data is protected.”
For Interlinked, which Kay started in 2019, a main area of concentration is cybersecurity.
“In today’s world, the threats (of) cybersecurity are getting worse and worse,” said Kay, an Air Force veteran who helped set up Department of Defense technology networks around the world. “There’s so much more risk for a small business to get hacked nowadays.” To combat that, he said, “We have a partnership with a security operations center — a team of IT threat hunters searching for potential hackers 24-7.”
And that service, he said, makes sense for not-so-big firms.
“A lot of small businesses may not have the means to hire a full-time IT cybersecurity team in-house, so we allow them to leverage the idea of not having someone dedicated full time, or we support the IT person they have,” he said. “It allows them to be more flexible by outsourcing their IT support and cybersecurity services so that the owners of those businesses can have peace of mind.”
Interlinked also provides cloud data assistance, cloud voice services, and structured cabling, some of which is accomplished through partnerships with other companies.
“Our mission is to expertly guide small businesses to better use their technology, whether that’s through increasing efficiency or finding more secure ways to use their existing technology,” Kay said. “We help them with all that so they can accomplish their business objectives.”
Mostly, he said, Interlinked provides remote tech support with occasional on-site work. Current and former clients hail from Glens Falls, Queensbury, Albany, and Plattsburgh in New York as well as from Vermont and Maine.
As head of a two-man company—the only other current employee at Interlinked is another
Gansevoort resident, Josh Scott—Kay has an affection for the business underdogs.
“I have a lot of great clients that I’ve formed great relationships with, and I love to see them succeed, and I think that that’s a mutual thing,” he said. “That’s one thing I love about the small-business community—how much we root for each other.”
