Stewart’s Shops is expanding their presence in Saratoga County. The company has purchased the Sunoco station which also housed a four-bay car wash at 2465 Route 9 in Mechanicville, near the roundabouts off of exit 12 on I-87 and across from the current Stewart’s location. The price was $1.2 million. It is unclear at this time if the company will sell or lease the current building located at 2505 Route 9 in Malta.

The car wash has already been demolished and a complete rebuild will begin this July with the goal to open the new store in the Fall. The new shop will have Sunoco branded gas, more room for seating and food-to-go options with pizza, meatballs, macaroni and cheese being some of the favorites.

“Malta is booming and we are excited to be a part of that growth and the opportunity to finally offer gas and a new Stewart’s Shop on this stretch of Route 9 for both commuters and Malta residents,” Erica Komoroske, Director of Public Affairs said. “There isn’t room for gas in our current location, so it will be nice to expand and have a gas presence in the area.”

Inflation and rising gas prices has not deterred the company from moving forward with expansion plans. Currently there are 53 shops in Saratoga County and 350 shops across New York and Vermont. By the end of the year there will be about 360 stores total. According to Komoroske, the company plans to spend around $50 million on store rebuilds and renovations in 2022. Fourteen stores will be remodeled and six new locations will be built.

“We’ve been extremely busy building in all corners of New York, from Middleburgh to Utica and western Vermont,” Komoroske said.

Along with more food options, there will be a covered outdoor patio that will be open year round and a beer cave. Additions to a shop like fresh landscaping, new patios, new outdoor seating, and a freshly paved parking lot make a huge difference to the overall feel of a shop, Komoroske added.

Stewart’s Shop Corporation has been in existence since the Dake family began clearing farms in what is now Greenfield in 1787. Three generations later, in 1921, Percy and Charles Dake began ice cream production, calling the company Dake’s Delicious Ice cream. They offered ice cream delivery- five gallons of ice cream for five dollars.

In 1945, the Dake brothers purchased a small dairy and ice cream operation from Don Stewart located on Church Avenue in Ballston Spa. This was the first Stewart’s Shop to open and is still in operation today. Today, Stewart’s drivers pick up fresh, local dairy products from about 20 different area farms.

In addition to award-winning dairy products and hundreds of convenient locations, Stewart’s Stops supports the community by giving about $7.5 million to local charities and non-profit organizations each year.

In addition to the new Mechanicville location, new or renovated stores are opening throughout the summer in Rotterdam, Schenectady, Sharon Springs, Ilion, and Potsdam.
