Working at a desk job or punching a clock is not what makes Wade Schoenborn tick.

“I really enjoy doing a variety of different things; doing one thing too long makes me go crazy,” said Schoenborn in a recent telephone interview. “I dabble in a little bit of everything.”

That’s why the Halfmoon resident started his own business, Hometown Handyman, and is doing work he truly enjoys. And he has company. His wife, Evie, is the other half of the business.

“We focus primarily on minor home repairs,” said Schoenborn, who can handle jobs both inside and outside the house—from hanging pictures to making or repairing brick walkways, and everything in between. According to the Niskayuna native, among other jobs, he can repair holes in Sheetrock, hang flat-screen televisions, paint rooms, fix holes in Sheetrock, remove trash or old carpeting, mow lawns, trim hedges, weed whack, blow leaves, and on and on.

His two primary specialties, however, are plumbing and masonry. Schoenborn, 29, can hook up washing machines, hot-water heaters, or other large appliances; install new faucets; fix clogged toilets and drains; replace copper piping with flexible plastic lines; and more. Concerning masonry, “anything brick or block, I’m proficient with,” he said, including small concrete pours such as for slabs or walkways.

Schoenborn previously worked for Belton Masonry of Ballston Lake for about seven years until the owner retired. He also worked a few years doing plumbing for JPH Mechanical of Schenectady and B&B Plumbing and Heating of Saratoga Springs.

Work is priced on a job-by-job basis. “It depends on the scope of the work, the materials needed, the time involved, how far I have to travel,” said Schoenborn, adding, “I am flexible. I will work with customers.” He also provides financing through the Markate app.

After meeting Wade through the Tinder dating app, Evie, 27, immigrated to America from her native Netherlands in 2020, and the two married the same year. They started the business earlier this year.

As a young Dutch girl, Evie attended a festival at which children were taught about home construction, and later, she helped her father build their new family home. After attending art school in the Netherlands, Evie developed a liking for painting. “Anything that involves creating something–that is awesome for me. That’s why I enjoy the work so much.”

“It’s really what both of us are passionate about,” said Wade.
